Q&A: Addiction to Vicodin and treatment?

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB 1 Comment »

Question by Rough times: Addiction to Vicodin and treatment?
My husband has been addicted to vicodin for about 4 years now. He is taking about 20 pills per day. His doctor called me and I told him the truth, that my husband is abusing the drug and buying them off of the streets and he needs help. Needless to say my husband is really mad at me. The doctor is putting him on methadone treatment and cut his vicodin prescription in half and now my husband is scared, saying he wont be able to work while taking methadone because it’s supposed to make you really drowsy. I am so out of my element here. I’ve never known anyone who was a drug addict and now I’m married to one. Are there any physicians or people with experience here to can help me to understand what he will be facing here. I feel like just running away from this sometimes but he needs my help.

rehab is the way to go. if it was just a year or some months then i’d say cold turkey is the way to go, but for that long, its pretty much like a heroin addict (just not so bad, trust me i’ve known all kinds of addicts). but start off by helping him keep his mind off the drug, thats the first step. most drug users do there drug of choice when there is nothing else around to do. but if all else fails, he NEEDS rehab. good luck.

Should I allow my children to see their father in a drug treatment center?!?

Question by : Should I allow my children to see their father in a drug treatment center?!?
My love and the father of my children is taking part in a six month rehabilitation program, because hes a heroine addict. He has been an IV drug user for about six months, and finally checked himself in because he claims he really wants help and wants to be a part of my and the kids life. I just don’t know if its a good idea to take my children, who are two and four, to visit their father. I mean hes in there with a whole bunch of people like him who have some sort of drug problem and I dont know if it would be appropriate for my babies to be around people like that. I mean I know that they need to see their dad and its already been a few weeks which is a really long time for my four year old who has seen her dad everyday of her little life before this. She really wants to see him and really misses him. She blames herself that she can’t see daddy and that he can’t live with us right now; I think her being able to see him and see that hes okay would help her be okay with the whole situation. I just don’t know if they should be in that kind of enviroment. I told her that he was sick and had to go to the hospital, I just dont want it to hurt them anymore. Another thing is in one month he can leave the facility for a few hours… should I just wait!??

i think you should take the children to see their dad…you dont say if youve visited yourself, but usually these centres never have any tell tale signs that the patients are drug users, and obviously everybody there is clean for the duration of their stay, so they will be reletavely normal people….why dont you go on your own first and see what you think?

Cultural differences in alcohol use, addiction and treatment – UK pub culture?

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB 2 Comments »

Question by h: Cultural differences in alcohol use, addiction and treatment – UK pub culture?
In the UK, people don’t meet for a coffee, they meet for a pint (or cocktail, whatever). Alcohol use is embedded in the social fabric – what might elsewhere be understood as mild alcoholism is easily accepted as normal – to the point that it’s not unusual for people to turn up for work with a hangover (or take a sick day to nurse a bad one). I think there’s resistance to the disease or genetic theory of alcoholism – people have ‘drink problems’, or just ‘like having a good time’, or are ‘being sociable’. This applies to all classes + groups: binge-drinking students + city workers; football fans; families (children are often welcome in pubs)…

To be abstinent, as is demanded of many alcohol treatment programmes, is to be a pariah. On top of that I think mental illness in general is largely taboo…

What are treatment strategies that make sense in this context, then? How do you help someone with a ‘drink problem’ who’s in sync with his culture?

Any thoughts are welcome…

The thing is! This drink culture is huge! I live in Scotland and I drink everyday, i love the feeling of downing a crisp cool pint, but that pint always turns into more!! Normally a total binge on beer, vodka, shot, absinthe, whisky. Anything that makes me drunk quickly. I dont know if I have a problem because here it is totally normal behaviour, but I do find myself “needing” a pint! Maybe its this dull, drab society that leads us scots to drink! But yet again – thats wot Scotlands famous for!
