Question by squid: Do you know anybody whose lives where permanently ruined because they got on SS disability?
Well my brother used to work, though he does have anxiety/OCD/depression issues (as do I). I have worked through these problems and continue to. Bro hasn’t worked a day since getting on SS in 1996. Instead his alcoholism and psych problems have been increasing and he is beligerent and impossible to reason with. He is not working through the problems. Now he is drinking himself to death. I applied for disability twice and I’m glad I got turned down. I am on the verge of a successful career now.
Best answer:
Answer by jac the hat No although you made me think there – I live in a part of the world with very high unemployment and neanderthal position on mental health it is very doubtful if anyone here with problems would be able to get work. I do think work is helpful. I did voluntary work as a mental health advocate and it helped me a lot for a while – I am retired now -I think there should be more opportunities to be useful in a safe way not all of us can cope with mainstream as that exacerbates the problems – Most of the really good schemes are in the learning disability sector at a certain level of mental unwellness we do seem to be bought off so as not to scare the native population

Question by jakek812: What do you know about rehab? In particular how to they treat cocaine addiction and sex addiction?
So I’m working on a script that’s supposed to cover this topic and I want to make it as authentic as possible. Any information about procedures in rehab, what the average day is like for a person in rehab and how the treatment works, especially for those two disorders, would be extraordinarily helpful. Both personal experiences and links to other sources would be happily accepted.
Best answer:
Answer by d1zy though i don’t know about the specifics of treating those two drugs i do know this.
treatments often keep patients in limbo. pacified. maybe sleeping a lot, or eating in front of the tv. so their daily life becomes a monotonous whitewash of daytime tv and doritos.
addicts are alert, politically aware and living the law of the jungle in a survival situation. sooner or later, out of boredom, the rehab cases will skip meds to go out for some fun.

Question by Joan of Darkness: Would you dump someone that omitted to tell you that they were a drug addict?
The guy has been clean for years but it seems like he would have told me that he had bouts with an addiction to powdered cocaine. I may not have wanted to deal with someone that had that problem.
Best answer:
Answer by Dallas really is it a deal breaker if he is clean now. i say you don’t have it for him anymore and you are looking for seasons to bail.

Question by DH: Do rich people believe if the billions of working poor would just work harder they wouldn’t be poor anymore?
Two ways to help humanity
1)Increase productivity, college, health care, mental help, addiction treatment, small business grants, etc, etc. This takes a very long time.
2)Decrease costs, fuel, water, housing, inflation, taxes, energy, food, transportation, etc, etc.
So, what can be reduced in costs right now. Well, inflation is man made so that would have the biggest impact.
And fuel and manufacturing costs can be reduced by already existing technology.
So what is easier, giving billions of people thousands cash to study real hard with or without diseases, and little family support or stepping on the toes of rich companies by free market?
My conclusion is we neglect the working poor, by spending our energy on homeless shelters, rehab, section8, etc, instead of the source which everyone has already surrendered to figuring out. Charity & nonprofits always set the bar of success at 1 person, how about everybody?
To ‘buy into mainstream culture’ is communistic. ic to not use the answers we already have to solve suffering of billions.
So we need a cutthroat person to fight for free market opportunities to help poor by providing lower costs and job opportunities at the same time.

Answer by skip1960 Honestly I think the rich think if we worked harder they’d be richer. Get the monkey’s off our backs.

Question by “smooothoperator”: Can a couple that were once drug addicts get clean and stay together clean and sober? or should they split?
Hello, a really good friend of mine started doing drugs with her boyfriend about a year ago and finally realized they hit rock bottom so they went to a couple of AA/NA meetings and relapsed a few times but a majority of people at the meetings keep telling them that they will never make it “together” because they are both triggers to each other. But then another couple said they are doing it clean and sober for 8 months now. She keeps asking me what to do, should she break up with him, get clean then see if it will work or just break up and be friends or just try it? She is totally putting her relationship in my hands but I am scared of giving her the wrong answers. Id rather NOT be involved in any way. But I am her bestest friend so please can I get some input?
Best answer:
Answer by breanna m you can definately make it together. you can correct your mistakes and lean on eachother to get through it. as long as the ot her person isnt pulling you down and holding you back from getting better

Question by Signed Anonymous: How do you get someone in Drug rehab if they don’t want help?
PLEASE I need answers, what are some things I can do to help some one I know who is on drugs but doesn’t want HELP at all. Can we force him (Family member) into some type of drug rehab or interventio? PLease any answers or tips ….This is life and death I need your help!
Best answer:
Answer by Joy You can try an intervention, but if they don’t want help you can’t make them. I know it can be heartbreaking but sometimes people just have to hit a rockbottom point before they want help. Good Luck with everything.

Question by zorro1701e: Alcoholics Anon, Narcotics anon, they all require a belief in higher power. Do they work for non believers?
Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics anonymous, they all require a belief in higher power or some kind of god. Do they work for non believers, for atheists or agnostics?
Or are those people destined to fail those programs because the programs are designed for believers?
I have asked this question already in cultures. But thought maybe i would get more responses from Religion & Spirituality
Im not going to one of those groups.
Im not a drug user and only drink at parties.
I was asking out of curiousity.
Best answer:
Answer by Atheist Hooligan Diver Dude! I don’t know, but there are non-theistic based recovery groups out there as well.

Question by Robby: Have you seen these claims about the gay community? Do you believe they are correct?
I posted a question earlier today asking why gays are viewed as “evil” as a means to gain a public opinion for a project and was surprised to see a this response. A participant provided these “statistics” (I am using this term loosely because the participant failed to cite her source) about the gay community to argue why gays should be condemned. PLEASE VIEW THE CLAIMS LISTED BELOW AND EXPLAIN IF YOU DO OR DON”T BELIEVE THESE CLAIMS ABOUT THE GAY COMMUNITY TO BE TRUE. WHY OR WHY NOT? Were these facts or similar ones shared in your Church?
The claims
* One study reports 70% of homosexuals admitting to having sex only one time with over 50% of their partners (3)
* One study reports that the average homosexual has between 20 and 106 partners per year (6). The average heterosexual has 8 partners in a lifetime
* Many homosexual sexual encounters occur while drunk, high on drugs, or in an orgy setting (7)
* Many homosexuals don’t pay heed to warnings of their lifestyles: “Knowledge of health guidelines was quite high, but this knowledge had no relation to sexual behavior” (16)
* Homosexuals got homosexuality removed from the list of mental illnesses in the early 70s by storming the annual American Psychiatric Association (APA) conference on successive years. “Guerrilla theater tactics and more straight-forward shouting matches characterized their presence” (2). Since homosexuality has been removed from the APA list of mental illnesses, so has pedophilia (except when the adult feels “subjective distress”) (27)
* Homosexuals account for 3-4% of all gonorrhea cases, 60% of all syphilis cases, and 17% of all hospital admissions (other than for STDs) in the United States (5). They make up only 1-2% of the population
* Homosexuals live unhealthy lifestyles, and have historically accounted for the bulk of syphilis, gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, the “gay bowel syndrome” (which attacks the intestinal tract), tuberculosis and cytomegalovirus (27)
* 73% of psychiatrists say homosexuals are less happy than the average person, and of those psychiatrists, 70% say that the unhappiness is NOT due to social stigmatization (13)
* 25-33% of homosexuals and lesbians are alcoholics (11)
* Of homosexuals questioned in one study reports that 43% admit to 500 or more partners in a lifetime, 28% admit to 1000 or more in a lifetime, and of these people, 79% say that half of those partners are total strangers, and 70% of those sexual contacts are one night stands (or, as one homosexual admits in the film “The Castro”, one minute stands) (3). Also, it is a favorite past-time of many homosexuals to go to “cruisy areas” and have anonymous sex
* 78% of homosexuals are affected by STDs (20)
* Judge John Martaugh, chief magistrate of the New York City Criminal Court has said, “Homosexuals account for half the murders in large cities” (10)
* Captain William Riddle of the Los Angeles Police says, “30,000 sexually abused children in Los Angeles were victims of homosexuals” (10)
* 50% of suicides can be attributed to homosexuals (10)
* Dr. Daniel Capron, a practicing psychiatrist, says, “Homosexuality by definition is not healthy and wholesome. The homosexual person, at best, will be unhappier and more unfulfilled than the sexually normal person” (10). For other psychiatrists who believe that homosexuality is wrong, please see National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality
* It takes approximately 0,000 to take care of each AIDS victim, so thanks to the promiscuous lifestyle of homosexuals, medical insurance rates have been skyrocketing for all of us(10)
* Homosexuals were responsible for spreading AIDS in the United States, and then raised up violent groups like Act Up and Ground Zero to complain about it. Even today, homosexuals account for well over 50% of the AIDS cases in the United States, which is quite a large number considering that they account for only 1-2% of the population
* Homosexuals account for a disproportionate number of hepatitis cases: 70-80% in San Francisco, 29% in Denver, 66% in New York City, 56% in Toronto, 42% in Montreal, and 26% in Melbourne (8)
* 37% of homosexuals engage in sadomasochism, which accounts for many accidental deaths. In San Francisco, classes were held to teach homosexuals how to not kill their partners during sadomasochism (8)
* 41% of homosexuals say they have had sex with strangers in public restrooms, 60% say they have had sex with strangers in bathhouses, and 64% of these encounters have involved the use of illegal drugs (8)
* Depending on the city, 39-59% of homosexuals are infected with intestinal parasites like worms, flukes and amoebae, which is common in filthy third world countries (8)
* The median age of death of homosexuals is 42 (only 9% live past age 65). This drops to 39 if the cause of death is AIDS. The median age of death of a married heterosexual man is
