Question by Somebody: Do I have to study specifically something to be an addiction worker?
I’m graduating soon and I really want to help people with drug addiction but I don’t know if I have to go to a college where they teach specifically those things. Does it really matter if I’ll go to a college and then I’ll be a nurse and so on…Can I still work as an addiction worker? I live in California and I don’t know about any specific colleges near me. I searched the internet too

It can help just to read some books on alcoholism, eating disorders, drug addiction, excessive spending, smoking. They may have a course at the College – but I have never seen one seperate class for addictions. I think it is what one learns in college when taking classes for social work (Bachelors in Social Work; Masters in Social Work) – it is probably in the cirrculum.

What Is an Addict? – Could You Be Addicted to Something?

ALCOHOLISM ADDICTION Comments Off

I live next door to a man and a woman who were recovered alcoholics and this man explained what an addict actually is. He told me that you’re not an alcoholic until the alcohol starts to create problems in your life. You’re not a drug addict, until the drugs create a problem in your life. The worst thing about being addicted to something is that these people seem to create problems in their lives, while they’re abusing substances or other activities like gambling and shopping. I know plenty of people who have gone to casinos for years, spending money that they don’t have, hoping to hit the ultimate jackpot. Sometimes we need to take a look at ourselves in order to find the problems and others.
