Question by thehabit237: Should I give this book to a recovering addict?
I just finished reading the book Tweak for the third time, the memoirs of Nic Sheff, who was a crystal meth addict. My cousin is a recovering addict and I was wondering if I should give this to her as inspiration or what, I’m not sure if I should. I don’t want her to read it and want to do drugs again through reading the experiences..can anybody help?

recovering alcoholic / sober 3+ years / berserk?

ALCOHOLISM ADDICTION 3 Comments »

Question by bioid: recovering alcoholic / sober 3+ years / berserk?
I’m 3+ years sober after coming out of a state-sponsored rehab – could I have been brainwashed?
since emerging “clean” from the program, my life has gone (well not so much my “life” per se – but my “self”) gone from bad to worse – to the cliff
sobriety has all but destroyed family relations I have because of violent outbursts – uncontrolled emotion – cursing aloud in public even, I don’t even care, I embarass my family..
and I’m apalled seeing these things coming from me – I’m not this person
I’m about done.
I’ve become so repulsed and disgusted with the human race – behavior for which I was chastized (behavior that I’ve spent 3+ years tempering) is glorified if not outright rewarded in society –
This world is a horrific place – I guess I was drinking to blur it all out? the only way I could function in a lifetime of living in utter disbelief and disgust?
I seem a totally different person pre- vs. post- rehab – could something have gone badly awry with rehab?
I am sick of this world
>>>I don’t think the world is bad enough to want to kill yourself or not live in it.

well that's your opinion

I think you might be experiencing some sort of depression. Maybe you need to talk to a counselor. Sometimes getting hypnotized helps. Hopefully you know better enough to not go back to drinking. It can kill you and I don’t think the world is bad enough to want to kill yourself or not live in it.

My boyfriend is a recovering crack addict. How do I best support him in his recovery?

Question by miss b: My boyfriend is a recovering crack addict. How do I best support him in his recovery?
Or, are there any assurances that he won’t relapse? We’re getting really close…I’m thinking that he’s going to propose over the holidays. He was clean and sober before we met, but I understand the 12 step philosophy that there is no recovered addict. I suppose, I just want assurances that y’all can’t give…but I’m asking anyway.
No, “once an addict, always an addict” isn’t true. I work in the mental health field…people can and DO change…it’s a belief one must have, esp. when one is in that profession. And Ihave seen people in my own life who, after they sobered up, stayed that way the rest of their lives
Yes, he was going to NA meetings before we met…he chairs the Friday meeting.
He’s been clean for nearly two years.

recovered addict
by Sumi-l

Question by Dave S: can a sleep aid be prescribed to a recovering alcoholic / addict?
I know that anything can be prescribed to anyone regardless of his or her disability, but I’m not sure if asking my doctor for something to help me sleep is a bad question considering I’m a recovering addict alcoholic.

Best answer:

Answer by Lisa A
Just take OTC Unisom. All prescription sleeping pills are addictive, except lunesta and rozerem, which don’t really work.

Why would a doctor prescribe an opiate painkiller to a recovering addict?

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB Comments Off

Question by mossimo: Why would a doctor prescribe an opiate painkiller to a recovering addict?
I feel like I constantly hear about recovering addicts falling off the bandwagon (sometimes of many years) due to their doctors giving them painkillers or anti-anxiety meds to help with procedures and what not. Is this medical negligence or is there really a medical reason for this!?

Best answer:

Answer by Megan
If the former addict cannot deal with the pain, they need the medicine. Obviously, if they are visiting the doctor for this problem than they cannot handle it. Also, not all addicts have something something within their file saying that about their past abuse.

if you are a recovering drug addict, does that mean you would also be an alcoholic?

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB 1 Comment »

Question by lovemysexyman: if you are a recovering drug addict, does that mean you would also be an alcoholic?
If you were addicted to drugs, does that mean that you would become addicted to alcohol, sex, and other vices? Or is it possible to be a drug addict and be able to drink alcohol and not be an alcoholic? Does being presently drug addicted make a difference verses being a recovering addict? How can you tell if someone is an alcoholic?

Best answer:

Answer by SuperVibrationalEscrow
No. In fact in my younger days when I hung around addicts, sometimes they would get away with it for quite a long time without family and friends finding out because they were either non-drinkers or they would be the type to trust as ‘designated driver’. Because they didn’t get into booze many people thought they were clean. It is very very common for those who are addicted to prescription drugs to steer clear of alcohol.
