cuz I’ve got 5 and I’d be scared spitless to be “in charge” of those psychos.

If someone was a hardcore drug addict, say multiple times a day for an extended period of time, how long would the withdrawal last if they quit cold turkey one day. How bad would it be? And for how long would they experience cravings while they were clean? Would they still feel the urge after two years, if the triggers that prompted them to take drugs in the first place were still there?

It depends on the drugs, the addict, and the type of recovery. As with cigarettes, the cravings become less often and less severe but can potentially resurface for the rest of the addict’s life.

Question by dj: Has anyone been sober for five plus years, relapsed and sobered up again and how long were you back out?
I got sober in 1995 after 20 years of drinking and drugging . Live was wonderful, then it got too wonderful, I got married, and as my counselors put it made may wife my higher power, it dindnt last, I got off my program, stareted smoking weed and eventually bak to full fledged active alcholism and drug additction. I’ve been divorced three years now, about the same length of time I’ve been using again. I need some hope. The second time around dont seem to be going to well

I really wanted to know after being addicted to drugs for years and becomming clean how long are you considered and addict or recovering addict i thought for life you are recovering even if your are clean but many people seem to think that once you stop you are no longer a recovering addict.

I was just wondering how long it would take for a person to recover from substance addiction. I have a neighbor who has just gotten into an inpatient drug rehab program and I want to know when he’s likely to be back here again.

The duration of the addiction treatment is likely to be dependent upon the needs of the person. It’s also dependent upon the length of time that the patient has been taking the substance. Your neighbor has to respond to the treatment positively so as to get out of rehab sooner. It takes a couple of months, and may even extend to a year or so.

He has had most of the complications in the last year, bleeding varices that were banded last fall, he still drinks, he sleeps most of the time, he has ascites and edema which the Dr. just put him on a diuretic to see if that will reduce the fluid. He has had bouts of Hepatic Encephalopathy also, but no signs of that now. He is a severe alcoholic, 56 years old and cannot/won’t quit drinking, although he does go for some days now without alcohol because he is too sick to drink. He is not a candidate for a transplant, so don’t mention that to me. I would like to know what the dying process consists of with cirrhosis and if the kidneys always fail first. I want specific days or weeks or months of his likely survival please from someone who may have gone through this. Do they all go into a coma before they die? Since he just started the diuretic Hydrochlorithiazide we don’t know if it will relieve the fluid buildup or not, but the Dr. did not recommend paracentesis for him.

I am just curious about what a methadone overdose does to your body in the long term?
What I mean is that my brother in law took WAY too much methadone and had no pulse and was not breathing and he is now in ICU and I was curious about what shape he is going to be in now
