I was sober 4 years and relapsed on New Years Eve. I feel horrible about it and I know why it happened.?

Question by A P: I was sober 4 years and relapsed on New Years Eve. I feel horrible about it and I know why it happened.?
I removed alcohol from my body for 4 years, but did not remove the “lifestyle”. I am surrounded by people who drink. Some are normal drinkers, some drink alcoholically. I was a social drinker in the early stages of alcoholism. I only worked AA for the first 6 months. I remained sober for 4 years out of fear of alcohol and because I liked myself better sober. I relapsed because of stress and pressure to drink. I also am surrounded by people who constantly tell me I don’t have a problem. My husband is a normal drinker, but he still likes to drink, and thinks that I just need to stay away from certain people so that I can drink normally (which is a total joke). His family drinks and my family drinks. All my friends drink, except one but I don’t get to see him but rarely. So, bottom line…I never want to relapse again…I am working AA again and know I need a complete lifestyle change. Any additional advice?

I don’t know how to get through to my drug addicted husband?

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB 4 Comments »

Question by queenmeow16: I don’t know how to get through to my drug addicted husband?
When my husband was a child he grew up in a home filled with drugs. All kinds. His mother’s and step father’s drug of choice was speed/meth. His step father was abusive to my husband until the step father was caught hurting my husband ( who was o became only 13) and the step father was arrested. He used to find his mother’s drugs and pipes and flush them or break them, but eventually he became curious and tried himself. He became addicted. He was taken away from his mother at 15 and placed with his aunt. He became clean. We have been going out for years as teens. When we hit 20 we married. We had one baby girl and at that point he got a job that was graveyard shift. He fell back into drugs. He said it was due to stress and feeling that he needed to be able to stay up to work. I am a person who has lived a somewhat sheltered life, never done any drugs or drank or even had a cigarette so i didn’t see the subtle clues he was using again. I never thought he’d go back. When I did realize what was happening i left him and said he had to chose what life he wanted. Drugs or our family in one home. He quit. We moved away from his mom who still uses. I later had another baby, this time a boy. Soon after I caught him red handed using. This time i said he has to do more than promise me it wouldn’t happen again. I asked him to do out patient rehab and marriage counseling. As part of the rehab he cannot drink or do any drugs. He has slipped and drank 3 nights in less than 2 weeks. The meeting scheduled today he told me he was leaving to there but he went to his moms instead. I called his council er and found out he skipped class he admitted he went to his moms but swears he didn’t do anything but hang out. I don’t know what to do. I love him, he seems to want to stop, but weak willed, hes the father of my children. i asked him to leave for the night but what do i do next?

I’m sorry, I don’t see any way out of this except that you leave him. You can’t have the children exposed to this day in day out. It will be hard but better in the long run. His own family is obviously no help at all.

do you know any “recovered” sex addict?

Question by Sally: do you know any “recovered” sex addict?
this is in regard to another question of mine:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgfuGAhAz9FBa2NemAaa0vzsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081009151148AAxxtmn

i decided to phrase it a little more objectively, rather than asking “do you think a sex addict can recover”, i phrase my question this way – do you know any “recovered” sex addict? this is a yes/no question.

i kind of need assurance that he won’t change, otherwise i might feel guilty for leaving him, because i was raised in a culture where you don’t leave a marriage until you turn no stone unturned to solve your marital problems.

Question by chris: Do you know any drug addiction treatment centers in Oakland, New Jersey?
Do you know where I can find a list of the different drug addiction treatment centers in Oakland, New Jersey? I’ve been looking for my cousin Jake for five months now. He left home and nobody knows where he went. Just recently, I heard from a friend that he is in an addiction treatment center somewhere in Oakland. I really want to find Jake. He’s like a brother to me. Any kind of help is appreciated.

Answer by Monica L
Hey Chris! I found a few helpful sites that might help you in that search for a drug addiction treatment center in Oakland. May I ask you something? Did you know about his addiction? I mean, he wouldn’t be in a treatment center if he’s not into drugs, right? I do wish you the best and I hope that Jake is doing well.

What do you think about, and know about, METHADONE treatment?

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB 6 Comments »

Question by Taziketoro: What do you think about, and know about, METHADONE treatment?
I’m writing a paper about methadone treatment (for addiction, nor for pain), whether or not it works well and what society thinks about it.

I would be very grateful if you could help me by telling me what you know about methadone treatment, where you have learned what you know, and what you think about the treatment, or whatever other comments you may have about the topic. I’m looking for as many comments as possible from “the general public”.

Please keep the comments/opinions coming.

Thank you!

Methadone detox is a three phase process designed to rid the methadone addict from the grip of methadone addiction. The most effective methadone treatment combines a safe atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, skilled physicians, effective medications and proper nutrition. The greatest fear methadone addicts have is the fear of methadone withdrawal symptoms. This fear can keep a person in their methadone addiction for years and years. The key to a successful methadone detox is to relieve the addict from the perceived threat of pain, nausea and insomnia. At Orange County Detox we go to great lengths assuage that fear. The fact is, Orange County Detox has developed a methadone treatment program that practically eliminates pain from the methadone detox process. The main concepts employed within our methadone detox process are “efficacy” and “compassion.” Orange County Detox believes in a humane methadone detox for anyone suffering from methadone addiction. The fact is within 24 hours after admission most clients are amazed that they feel so well. We use a specialized methadone detox program just for methadone addicts unlike the protocol methadone detox programs of many other detox centers. We are opponents of the methadone maintenance programs that are found throughout the United States. Even Suboxone maintenance is a dangerous option. Orange County Detox is a suboxone detox center and a believer in total abstinence after opiate detox is complete. Orange County Detox (suboxone detox California) recommends that a methadone addict can never safely use any opiate again. We recommend full disclosure to any and all physicians including dentists for the rest of their life.

Do you know anybody whose lives where permanently ruined because they got on SS disability?

ALCOHOLISM ADDICTION Comments Off

Question by squid: Do you know anybody whose lives where permanently ruined because they got on SS disability?
Well my brother used to work, though he does have anxiety/OCD/depression issues (as do I). I have worked through these problems and continue to. Bro hasn’t worked a day since getting on SS in 1996. Instead his alcoholism and psych problems have been increasing and he is beligerent and impossible to reason with. He is not working through the problems. Now he is drinking himself to death. I applied for disability twice and I’m glad I got turned down. I am on the verge of a successful career now.

No although you made me think there – I live in a part of the world with very high unemployment and neanderthal position on mental health it is very doubtful if anyone here with problems would be able to get work. I do think work is helpful. I did voluntary work as a mental health advocate and it helped me a lot for a while – I am retired now -I think there should be more opportunities to be useful in a safe way not all of us can cope with mainstream as that exacerbates the problems – Most of the really good schemes are in the learning disability sector at a certain level of mental unwellness we do seem to be bought off so as not to scare the native population
