Kevin Coyne could, perhaps, only have come out of the Sixties and Seventies British music scene. His sad, savage, thought-provoking songs, delivered in a unique voice were unlike anything else around. He had the power to draw raw emotions from a deep subconscious well. Kevin’s experience working in a psychiatric hospital and with alcoholics left an indelible mark on his life and songs. In later life Kevin had his own struggles with nervous breakdown and alcoholism. He died of a lung condition on 2 December 2004 in Germany, where he had lived for many years. This video may serve as a small tribute to a hugely talented and sadly neglected songwriter and performer. This charming, moving, inspirational song is actually not typical of his work but deserves to be better known. If we recognized our common humanity perhaps there would be many more smiles.
