Alcoholism, fired from work…?

Question by J T: Alcoholism, fired from work…?
Up till today, I was (one-of-the-many) substance abusing/trying to recover medical employees in a busy E.D.

I’ve participated at a rehab a few months ago and talked to Employee Assistance Prog. about some of the stresses I had (related and unrelated to my prior substance abuse).

Today, I got fired for being allegedly intoxicated 2 weeks ago. I may have had something in my system due to a relapse prior to being called in to work surprisingly, but I was not drinking on the job.

In any case, although not mentioned, I suspect that I also may be unjustly accused of having had access to a patient’s meth. Security and a supervisor were investigating this case and I was one of many people who had temporary custody of the belonging of a patient who had this meth in his belongings. I did not steal this patient’s meth (I don’t do meth and work very very hard on my early alcoholism recovery)

I understand that there will be vicious comments that are nothing new to what I’ve been hearing in my own head already most of my life (so, please, leave me alone and let me try figure this out on a mature level with other people, who may have something new to say to me, so that I can make this a learning experience).

I’m not sure how to proceed from here. I’ll be starting to look for a new job once I gather the energy and hope to do so. I haven’t even had the courage to tell my husband about this yet, I’m feeling ashamed, defeated, like running in circles, always ending up on the same spot… I’m feeling really really down and suicidal rather than angry or so. I don’t understand why I’m sabotaging myself like this and I don’t see a solution or hope to change. Ever since I started ‘recovery’, things have gotten much much worse than ever before.

Are there any personal ideas, inspirational stories, experiences?

Let me start off by saying that it sounds like you work hard and you want to get better which for some people who have a substance abuse problem or alcohol abuse is pretty hard. Going through rehab and trying to better yourself is not easy. They say in statistics that people do tend to feel worse at the beginning of therapy or rehab regarding mental illness and addiction. What you are going through is normal. recovery is hard for you because you are retraining your brain how to function without the use of alcohol. I commend you on your efforts and must say that you should not give up. Your life will deffinately get better as long as you stick with your rehab and recovery and are willing to do so. Sure you may have been fired as a result of a relapse but you shouldn’t beat yourself up so much, give yourself time this week and take a break. These things happen for a reason. It may even be good for you to look for a brand new job and start with a clean slate. Start somewhere where certain triggers do not remind you of your past. Think of yourself as starting a new beginning with a new sober life and a better life at that.

I hope that my comment has helped you in some way to keep going. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year to a new you! :)

Great Grandmother Fired for Refusing Flu Shots!!

ADDICTION NEWS 3 Comments »

Great Grandmother fired from the CAP Healthcare program in Davie County North Carolina. She was told she must comply with a new policy that she take the seasonal and H1N1 flu shots, or get a doctors exemption. So she went to her doctor, got a letter of exemption, and CAP STILL FIRED HER! This is a taste of our future here in America. Manditory shots, physicals, and prescriptions. 1984 has arrived. For more information feel free to email us, farren@wearechangenc.com Letter sent to local newspaper……… I would like to make the populace of Davie County aware that the Davie County Hospital has made it abundantly clear that freedom has been reduced to a historical relic. I am referring to the firing of a 77 year old great grandmother, Bobby Shoaf of Rosewood Lane in Mocksville, who worked for the CAP program for eight years. Mrs. Shoaf is a lifelong Davie County resident who stayed one day a week with her mentally challenged sister, and was employed by the CAP Program, via the Davie County Hospital. Recently she was told that the new hospital policy now requires both the seasonal flu shot and H1N1 swine flu shot, in order to remain employed, unless obtaining a Doctors exemption for health reasons or having a religious reason to abstain. Mrs. Shoaf then contacted her Doctor, Dr Edwards, who wrote a letter on her behalf and stated in his medical opinion Mrs. Shoaf should not take any Flu shots given her potential allergic reaction to it. The family member in which Mrs. Shoaf

Is it legal to be fired for asking your boss for a LOA to enter rehab for alcoholism?

ALCOHOLISM ADDICTION 1 Comment »

My brother asked his employer for a leave of absence so he could go to rehab for alcoholism (forget that his employer supposedly has an open door policy and programs to help its employees with problems without any reprocussions), his boss responded by firing him. Im pretty sure this is a violation of his ADA rights, but would like to know exactly what laws are being broken and the best way to handle the situation, as my brother cannot afford legal consult.
