barely drive because of extreme panic attacks that started in 2000 when I was in a bad car accident, a drunk driver hit and ran me. I have been marginally employed the past 10 years, and haven’t worked in 3 years.

Should I return to work yet after being on disability for alcoholism and bipolar?

Question by Anissa Jones: Should I return to work yet after being on disability for alcoholism and bipolar?
I just completed an outpatient alcohol rehab program that lasted four weeks. I’ve been sober now for about 33 days. Prior to going out on disability for this, I was messing up at work constantly, and it wasn’t entirely due to alcoholism. I never drank on the job or before work. Since I’ve been out on disability, I got written up & am in danger of getting fired. I have bipolar, depression & anxiety really bad and takes meds for these conditions. I have now cross transferred my alcohol addiction to being addicted to a male friend I met in rehab. I think of him 24/7 and can’t function. I’m 46 years old, btw. He only wants to be friends w/me, but he gave me so much attention that I’ve been yearning from a man since I was a teen. Should I discontinue contact w/him & go out on mental disability for a few more weeks? My job is very stressful for anyone really. Thx.

Do you know anybody whose lives where permanently ruined because they got on SS disability?

Question by squid: Do you know anybody whose lives where permanently ruined because they got on SS disability?
Well my brother used to work, though he does have anxiety/OCD/depression issues (as do I). I have worked through these problems and continue to. Bro hasn’t worked a day since getting on SS in 1996. Instead his alcoholism and psych problems have been increasing and he is beligerent and impossible to reason with. He is not working through the problems. Now he is drinking himself to death. I applied for disability twice and I’m glad I got turned down. I am on the verge of a successful career now.

No although you made me think there – I live in a part of the world with very high unemployment and neanderthal position on mental health it is very doubtful if anyone here with problems would be able to get work. I do think work is helpful. I did voluntary work as a mental health advocate and it helped me a lot for a while – I am retired now -I think there should be more opportunities to be useful in a safe way not all of us can cope with mainstream as that exacerbates the problems – Most of the really good schemes are in the learning disability sector at a certain level of mental unwellness we do seem to be bought off so as not to scare the native population

Question by <3: Is alcoholism considered a disability by law?
Someone I know had an employee who showed up at work drunk. It would make sense to fire them. He was told he could not fire the employee since there was a possibility the employee was an alcoholic and alcoholism is a disability you cannot be fired over.

Thoughts?
