Drug Rehabilitation that works

He has had most of the complications in the last year, bleeding varices that were banded last fall, he still drinks, he sleeps most of the time, he has ascites and edema which the Dr. just put him on a diuretic to see if that will reduce the fluid. He has had bouts of Hepatic Encephalopathy also, but no signs of that now. He is a severe alcoholic, 56 years old and cannot/won’t quit drinking, although he does go for some days now without alcohol because he is too sick to drink. He is not a candidate for a transplant, so don’t mention that to me. I would like to know what the dying process consists of with cirrhosis and if the kidneys always fail first. I want specific days or weeks or months of his likely survival please from someone who may have gone through this. Do they all go into a coma before they die? Since he just started the diuretic Hydrochlorithiazide we don’t know if it will relieve the fluid buildup or not, but the Dr. did not recommend paracentesis for him.

Hi, I recently concern about my liver.
because i’m an alcoholic.
I drink beer about 6 beers a day everyday(been for a year).
and my body doesn’t have much tolerance on alcohol.
i get pretty much red faced and buzzed or drunk.with 6 pack of beer.
I kept drinking everyday, because somehow if I don’t drink the 6 pack, i feel like i need to drink them before sleep or i can’t really go to sleep. and it has been like that for a year.
anyway, someone told me that if i keep drinking everyday, i may get liver cancer or cirrhosis. and i may not know until i lose most of the liver.
after hearing that i thought about it but i thought
“i don’t drink a lot like heavy drinkers, i should be fine”
and kept drinking until recently
i found myself feeling slightly uncomfortable around my liver area or stomach.
and i think my skin tone has got little yellowisher slightly, and my body gets tired sooner than before. and I think i may have cirrhosis?
what do you think?
should i go check with doctor or do you think it’s just lil hepatitus?
well i just stopped drinking today.

i am not a massive drinker…i dont think so..i live in japan and the drinking is 20..so i drink now and i am 20 yrs old. i drank a little when i was 14..i got really drunk a couple times or maybe just one…i drank so much i passed out. that was my first experience with alcohol. i drank after that rarely. then got a little worse at 16. but i didnt drink everyday. alcohol was hard to get. then i came to japan and started drinking again when i was 19 almost everyday. i look older than i really am here in japan, and they never check my i.d. now i am 20 so i drink alot more..theres times where i drink up to 7 drinks..most times i drink 2-3 drinks everyday..then reduced a little to 2 drinks a day..i am trying to keep my drinking at 2 drinks a day. lately i have been feeling a little dull ache in my area where my liver is located i believe. and i have been studying on cirrhosis a little, and now i am little paranoid. am i in real danger?

my boyfriend is an alcoholic he is 25 and has been one since 15. he recently was in a alcohol program (sober house) for 6 months and was going to the doctors regularly. the doctor was running tests and told him he could possibly have cirrhosis of the liver and was shocked when my boyfriend told him that he hadnt had a drink in a year and a half and said that it looked like he was still drinking til this day.. it really scared him and he never went back. Needless to say hes been drinking since he left the program 6 months ago everyday, what could happen to him if he really has this? can he just drop dead? how long can his drinking and surviving last if he really has cirrhosis of the liver?

A family member of mine has cirrhosis of the liver due to no fault of her own (never being an alcohol drinker, I mean). She is in the hospital now and the doctors say she most likely won’t last another couple of days. She has been in the hospital this time for almost 2 weeks and for the last 5 days now, the doctors will not give her anything to eat or drink. She is in and out of consciousness and when she wakes up, she mumbles that she is hungry. All the doctors will do is take a swab of water and wipe the inside of her mouth with it. They say that they need to keep her dehydrated so that when she starts to pass away, it will be less painful for her. And she can’t eat anything because they’re scared she could choke on it or it could end up in her lungs. They say that dying from this disease is a horrible way to die and they are trying to make it a little easier on her. I just don’t understand how they can say that starving her for 5 days is making anything any easier on her. The poor woman wakes up from her “sleep” and the first thing she says is that she’s hungry and they give her another shot and she goes back to sleep. This just doesn’t seem right to me. If anyone knows someone who has gone through this or is a doctor that knows anything on this I would greatly appreciate it.

Last tuesday my father started taking indomethacin for a day or two because the aleve he was taking didn’t help the pain he was experiencing from a bad episode of gout.

last friday my father went to the er because he was light-headed and his left arm was numb. so went to the er after waiting for hours to be seen they ran several tests and determined everything is good except something funny with his liver. they said it is inflamed. but the papers said it was cirrhosis. they said to go to the doctor within 4 days and check everything out.

his doctor of many years read his medical history and seemed confident that it is not cirrhosis. he believes his liver was inflamed because of my fathers long time alcohol habits along with him taking aleve and indomethacin for his gout. he said to come back in 8 weeks to allow everything to get out of his system so he can run some new tests.

I want to believe our family doctor because the ER took hours before I was helped, then I’d sit in the room for long periods of time and wait for someone to come back. I’m terribly nervous and not sure what to think. My mom is going to make him an appointment for a second opinion with a liver specialist tomorrow.

he has stopped taking the indomethacin and aleve. also he has stopped all consumption of alcohol. he is only taking now cold & flu medicine for he developed a fever last night and has had symptons of a cold today.

so my question is it possible for your liver to become inflamed by a combonation of certain medicines?

How is the mistake of someone who thinks they can avoid the damage done by cirrhosis if they dont eat while they are drinking alcohol

My uncle was admitted into the hospital in 2004 and was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol. My mom told me that we are lucky that he lived, the doctors were telling my family to be prepared for the worse. He was very skinny and had jaundice, I could barely recognize him. He was eventually well enough to be released from the hospital and went to rehab, which he has now been out of for a while. At the time, I was young and didn’t really understand what was going on, but now I’m nervous. I have heard many different things about how long those diagnosed with this condition will live but have always been somewhat confused. Over the past couple years, it seems his mental stability has deteriorated. I’ve done some research and it seems like he has encephalopathy, always acting like he is drunk and he’s very forgetful. His sleeping patterns are very off as well. Overall, I feel as if his health is slowly getting worse. I am positive he hasn’t had a liver transplant.
What’s going on?
Can someone tell what stage of cirrhosis he had based on the information?
Also, does anyone know the typical life expectancy of a person with this specific stage of the condition? I’m very nervous and no one has really told me a lot about the disease.

I don’t drink hard alcohol, am 61 yrs. old, tendency toward high cholesterol, drink beer, but not everyday. I don’t urinate often. When passing stools they are small and hard. Do I have a disease?

my mom’s mom had cirrhosis i think in her late 30′s..im 32 and drink a healthy ammount of alcohol..or unhealthy depending on the amount of time i spend at the bars on the weekends, or if im drinking a bottle of wine at home on occasion..2/3 times a week perhaps….am i to get cirrhosis too?..is it hereditary or due to the amount of alcohol a one consumes..apparantly she was quite an alchi…and i think ive a handle on m;y drinking as it doesnt really affect my job; child raising…
