Question by Icecream: Is it ok for a recovered alcoholic to have some beer?
A guy I know had gone to rehab for alcohol a few years ago and now he has a couple of beers but no longer the hard alcohol he used to have. Is that ok? I’ve never had beer so I don’t know if it’s not as strong so ok to have like most guys have. It seems harmless compared to all the whiskey he used to have so I haven’t said anything to avoid confrontation if it’s in fact ok.

Answer by angel_fish_77 If he is drinking anything that contains alcohol, he is not recovered. An alcoholic cannot have anything that contains alcohol, or it is considered a relapse.

I’ve noticed over my 20 year drinking career that most major problems related to alcohol occur when hard liquor is involved. If I drink only beer, life stays under control. Also, people I’ve known who died or got into car wrecks because of alcohol… all were drinking liquor.
Seems like professional counselors could legitimately recommend that a treatment program involve beer, but absolutely no liquor.
Are alcoholic energy drinks the equivalent of beer in terms of alcohol volume?
For instance, if i have one Sparks or Tilt – would it be like drinking a beer or do they have more alcohol in them? Sparks has 7.0 – 8 alcohol volume and Tilt has 6.6 – 8.0 alcohol volume.
