recovering alcoholic / sober 3+ years / berserk?

Question by bioid: recovering alcoholic / sober 3+ years / berserk?
I’m 3+ years sober after coming out of a state-sponsored rehab – could I have been brainwashed?
since emerging “clean” from the program, my life has gone (well not so much my “life” per se – but my “self”) gone from bad to worse – to the cliff
sobriety has all but destroyed family relations I have because of violent outbursts – uncontrolled emotion – cursing aloud in public even, I don’t even care, I embarass my family..
and I’m apalled seeing these things coming from me – I’m not this person
I’m about done.
I’ve become so repulsed and disgusted with the human race – behavior for which I was chastized (behavior that I’ve spent 3+ years tempering) is glorified if not outright rewarded in society –
This world is a horrific place – I guess I was drinking to blur it all out? the only way I could function in a lifetime of living in utter disbelief and disgust?
I seem a totally different person pre- vs. post- rehab – could something have gone badly awry with rehab?
I am sick of this world
>>>I don’t think the world is bad enough to want to kill yourself or not live in it.

well that's your opinion

I think you might be experiencing some sort of depression. Maybe you need to talk to a counselor. Sometimes getting hypnotized helps. Hopefully you know better enough to not go back to drinking. It can kill you and I don’t think the world is bad enough to want to kill yourself or not live in it.

I sober for a week after being an alcoholic for a couple of years. Any advice?

ALCOHOLISM ADDICTION 7 Comments »

Question by David J: I sober for a week after being an alcoholic for a couple of years. Any advice?
I’m sober and my body feels pretty good. I have more focus also. However, I’m kinda in a rut and a little depressed. Don’t really know what to do with myself. Any experienced recovering people out there with helpful advice, or words of inspiration?

Exercise is better than any anti-depressant medication. Trust me, there are multiple studies.

I try to keep busy… what matters is being occupied, not so much what I’m occupied with.

has anyone ever dated an alcoholic and drug addict (recovered), when u have a few drinks & it work out?

Question by firequeenp: has anyone ever dated an alcoholic and drug addict (recovered), when u have a few drinks & it work out?
i have been talking to this guy and just found out that he is a recovered drug addict/alcoholic. he has been sober for 7 years. he is a great guy and we have alot in common, but i have no experience with someone like this.
i myself, am not a huge drinker, but i do like to have a few drinks when i am out or at a concert or something. also i smoke pot, socially. i would have no problem not doing that around him, but i just wonder if it is even worth it to see where this goes. does a relationship like this have a future?
i don’t want to get my or his hopes up and continue this on if we’re not compatible in the long term because he is sober and i like to have the occasional drink/joint.
like i said i have never dated anyone with any substance abuse problems before, so it just makes me a little nervous. i have dated potheads that don’t drink and drinkers that don’t smoke, but never someone who doesn’t do both, and for that reason (addiction). advice, thoughts, experiences please :)

Wont work, my boyfriend is a recovering alcoholic, and when we started dating I knew that I wouldn’t drink again. I never liked drinking but occasionally I did drink. But since I love him and want to be with him and want him healthy and alcohol free I would never drink. Its the only way a relationship like that would work.

recovered addict

Question by Dave S: can a sleep aid be prescribed to a recovering alcoholic / addict?
I know that anything can be prescribed to anyone regardless of his or her disability, but I’m not sure if asking my doctor for something to help me sleep is a bad question considering I’m a recovering addict alcoholic.

Best answer:

Answer by Lisa A
Just take OTC Unisom. All prescription sleeping pills are addictive, except lunesta and rozerem, which don’t really work.

if you are a recovering drug addict, does that mean you would also be an alcoholic?

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB 1 Comment »

Question by lovemysexyman: if you are a recovering drug addict, does that mean you would also be an alcoholic?
If you were addicted to drugs, does that mean that you would become addicted to alcohol, sex, and other vices? Or is it possible to be a drug addict and be able to drink alcohol and not be an alcoholic? Does being presently drug addicted make a difference verses being a recovering addict? How can you tell if someone is an alcoholic?

Best answer:

Answer by SuperVibrationalEscrow
No. In fact in my younger days when I hung around addicts, sometimes they would get away with it for quite a long time without family and friends finding out because they were either non-drinkers or they would be the type to trust as ‘designated driver’. Because they didn’t get into booze many people thought they were clean. It is very very common for those who are addicted to prescription drugs to steer clear of alcohol.

can a sober alcoholic – sober 3 years – take sedative prescribed by a doctor? i believe AA says no?

Question by iheartexistence: can a sober alcoholic – sober 3 years – take sedative prescribed by a doctor? i believe AA says no?
…but what if the patient has been prescribed them, and the doctor knows of their alcoholic history, and the medication is needed.

Best answer:

Answer by the ~maiden~ xanz
That has to be decided by the patient. But i would say that many times this can lead to problems. It’s a hard road, but altering the mood for one that is addicted, prescribed or not, can sometimes lead them to become dependent on something else, only trading one addiction for another.

Whether it’s needed or not, prescribed or not is not something that the body or brain concerns itself with. No one will be able to say how any one person will respond to it, whether it will cause problems or not, but the history of most would make it a risk.

Some people can be very tough with themselves and are able to do a u-turn if it begins to look like relapse is likely. Some cannot and will only convince them that because they need it and the doctor said OK, then it’s fine. Just remember that the doctor is human, AND the doctor does not have to deal with the consequences.

There are other ways to deal with anxiety. Biofeedback, counseling can offer cognitive exercises and techniques to help cope. If nothing else has been tried yet, other alternatives might be a good idea first.
