Q&A: “Recovery” Just looking for others opinions on “drug addiction”?

Question by trish m: “Recovery” Just looking for others opinions on “drug addiction”?
how many of you believe that 12 step programs work? and how many of you know someone who has given up everything that matters for their drug of choice? Just sincere answers please…
You have pointed out one of the main things that needs to be there “willingness” good job!
I’m an addict in recovery (5yrs) and I know each person is different. some just quit, others use AA/NA, and then some need a combo of the AA and therapy… One thing that all addicts lack is the ability to cope with life on life’s terms. If an addict doesn’t learn to cope then they tend to just switch addictions… from drugs to others i.e. eating, gambleing, workaholic, thank you guys for your answers and I’ll give this question till the end of the day..

I had gotten into drugs and alcohol for a while, and I’m only 15. The fact is I didn’t want to stop, no matter who said what I just didn’t. So I found out the hard way, that you cannot quite unless you really [[100%]] want to. It took someone special leaving me for me to quite. But I have alot of friends into drugs and they give up alot for drugs… I haven’t seen any of the therapy things working for them, because they didn’t want to quit. Hope that answers your question, just my opinion.

How to Become an Addiction Counselor with prior Felony?

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB Comments Off

Question by ☼grundle goat☼: How to Become an Addiction Counselor with prior Felony?
my girlfriend was convicted for possession of meth 7 years ago. she did some time in prison and finished a 2 year treatment program for substance abuse. she has been clean and sober now over 6 years and currently works as a residential technician at a treatment facility. she very much wants to go back to school and become a certified counselor specializing in addiction issues. she has turned her life completely around and wants to invest all of her time and knowledge into helping other addicts find recovery. what are the steps she should take to become a drug and alcohol counselor? is there a specific course outline to become one?
thanks in advance.

there is no need for negative comments concerning her past. i just want to be able to help her get into school to pursue what she calls her ‘mission in life’ to help other addicts.

My wife is a psychotherapist and she said she doesn’t know of any way to do what you have described, short of having her criminal record expunged by a court. However, it may depend on where you live. Each state has its own laws regarding…….well, nearly everything. In my state (Arkansas), a felonious past is a dead-end for someone wishing to become a therapist or many other professions like mine (teaching). Your best bet would probably be to ask a local attorney where to find the relevant statutes regarding this, or find the contact information of the state psychology licensing board and ask them. I’m sure this question has been asked before. Maybe there are alternatives that have less stringent acceptance rules. (Maybe social work professions? IDK)

I’m happy that your friend has changed her life and is now trying to help others. That is very admirable. However, this might be an example of where she will still have to “pay” for past mistakes. Some bad choices have a way of sticking around for a lifetime. Good luck.

Am I in deep denial over my husband’s drug addiction?

Question by DEBBIE W: Am I in deep denial over my husband’s drug addiction?
My 50 year old husband is a drug addict. He has battled addiction throughout our marriage of 12 years. It started out with pain pills and progressed to crack/cocaine. He was clean for 3 years and relapsed last year. Relapse started with cocaine but now I think it is more pain pills. I am the only one working and we don’t have the money for cocaine. He has pawned and traded just about everything we have. Has borrowed money from a former boss and when he asks him to work it is to “work off” what he owes. He swears that he has done nothing since 1.5.2010 but there are days when I come home from work and I suspect he has done something. Of course, he denies it when confronted. He is unemployed and what I make is barely keeping our head above water. Our home is being foreclosed on–goes up for sale 3.18.2010. When confronted about getting a job he makes a joke about it and says “when I know that I can pass a drug test”. Am I in some serious denial or am I not giving him a chance to prove himself. He made a comment about if roles were reversed, he would stand beside of me. I have stood beside of him for many years through this addiction. I can’t stand anymore. I have thought of divorce but I know that would probably send him over the edge. What do you think?

I think you’ll put up with his problem until you can’t anymore. It’s up to you. Life is not a dress rehearsal you’re only here once, how much of it are you going to waste on his problem?

Question by atind: How do I approach my employer about me struggling with an addiction and treatment is best asap.?& MY JOB?BOSS.
I have just gained my senority but not yet out of my probationary period. The company ,of course, has a no tolerance of drug policy.Drug Tests were manditory before hired so wanting to straight up my act anyway, that was a motivation start to not use anymore.Unfortnately, I have been unable not to use. Not nearly as much but as important as this job is to my heart there should be no excuse for the little bit of use. It was the middle of a work week after I had not used for 4 or 5 days the pain in my muscles and soreness of my arms and legs were not from what I thought to be the physical labor the position I am in requires(lifting 1lb. to 70lbs repetiously)was actually withdrawls that I realized for the first time since I began using. I finally admit after all the times I said I could turn it down and rehab myself at any time, I AM WRONG!! And want the old spontaneous spunky witty hardworking ole girl back. As well as many others I distanced from and continued to grow their seed.THX!

Drug Addiction Music Video: Tellemahooka (Go Ask Alice)

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB 22 Comments »

A King Productions presents… Tellemahooka (Go Ask Alice)… A music video co-written by A.King / G.Slick, and produced, arranged, and composed by A.King. This is not an anti-drug song, nor is it advocating drug use… but it does focus on both sides of the drug issue and it’s likely consequences. The song contains a sample of the classic Jefferson Airplane song “White Rabbit”, and get it’s title from a line in the song, which is “Tell ‘em a Hooka”, and features footage from several “anti-drug” propaganda and educational films from the 60′s and 70′s. So take a look… listen… and decide for yourself. Enjoy!!!! A. King

Relapse..drug addiction.?

Question by jcmodelchick: Relapse..drug addiction.?
Relapse..drug addiction.?
i fear my boyfriend is having a relapse… hes doing the whole isolation thing and wont call me or his mom back, which before he went to rehab meant he was off using… i dont know how to react… i am pissed, but i know blowing up wont help the situation, but if i just let him get away with it then he will think its okay and IT IS NOT. ive already told him i cant go though the whole additive addiction again, but i also know people slip, i want to help him get back on track but i dont want him to think i will just sit here and go through this again and again… i wont. please help!

ive been working my own recovery as far as being co-dependent and i go to naranon, so i know i cant “fix” it… im not trying to do that, im tryin to manage my own reaction to his action and i need help on what the most constructive way of doing this would be…

Answer by maamu
Co-dependent people are addicted to addicts. You know that. You need to run, not walk, away from this man.

Don’t use the blah blah blah line about loving him, rather love yourself enough to leave. If he cares enough about you–he will straighten his act up and follow after you.

He is an addict. You and his mother are his safety nets, always chasing around after him and making sure he will not hit bottom.

Let me give you one last word of advice, safety nets soon turn into doormats. No one has any feelings or respect for a doormat. Don’t become one.
