Drugs & AIDs – Russia

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB 25 Comments »

July 2002 It’s 5am: rush hour for some of Moscow’s junkies. “I’ve almost no veins left,” says Roma, a former dancer and choreographer. Natasha was a classical violinist. She started using after a beating by police. The UN estimates 2 ½ million Russians use drugs intravenously, and as a result, the AIDS rate has doubled in the past year. The authorities are doing little to help or warn addicts of the dangers. Moscow’s Mayor refuses even to allow outreach workers to distribute clean needles. But drug addiction doesn’t just affect the poor. Simon lies in one of the city’s few rehab clinics. His successful factories support his 5g a day heroin habit. “I’d shoot up and go to the casino…” Marcia was training to be an Olympic gymnast. “Imagine there was 1g of cocaine for each person. Imagine the state you were in the next morning. What can get you out of that state? Only heroin”. Natasha says needle sharing is rife, even if you know the user is infected with Hepatitis. Most of her friends already have AIDS. The entire federal budget for AIDS is less than US million. It’s left to charities and the church to fill the gap. Father Anatoly Berestov blames Russia’s epidemic of addiction on the moral void left by the collapse of the Soviet Union. He’s fighting it with spirituality, not helped, he says, by corrupt police who extort bribes from addicts. If Russia doesn’t wake up to its drugs/AIDS problem soon, rates of infection could reach those of Africa.

Treatment for a gaming addiction?

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB 10 Comments »

Question by Serena: Treatment for a gaming addiction?
I won’t get into TOO much detail, because I could go on for hours typing all of my husband’s issues and how much it’s breaking my heart. He basically has an addiction to a computer game and it’s ruining our marriage. He plays 16-18 hours per day, every single day that he’s home. He hardly sleeps. He works offshore for 2 weeks, then is home for 2 weeks, so for those 2 weeks, he plays non-stop and ignores me. It’s not a hobby, and he cannot stop. He’s admitted he is addicted, but doesn’t realise that continuing what he’s doing is going to ruin our relationship. I tell him all the time that if he doesn’t stop, I’m leaving, but I don’t want to leave him – I want my husband back.

He wasn’t like this when we got married 5 years ago. He was a sweet, considerate, loving, attentive husband. He started playing this game a few years ago, and everything has been downhill since then. He plays with people who are unemployed and single or divorced, so they convince him I’m a terrible, controlling nag who is being unreasonable by asking him to limit his gaming hours. They also threaten to ruin his “achievements” and high ranking in the game if he doesn’t put in long hours. Even with how much time he does spend, they still complain it’s not enough. It’s like he’s been brainwashed.

If our house were to burn down, I would put every cent I have on him rescuing his laptop before rescuing me.

He can’t even sit at the dinner table without bringing his laptop. I go to work at 8am (often after being woken up by his typing/talking at 4am), leaving behind a clean house, and come home at 6pm to a messy disaster that he expects me to clean up. He doesn’t say thank you for anything I do for him, and he’s become a selfish child. I even stopped doing his laundry, hoping he’d manage to do his own washing in those long hours he spends at home everyday, but he just wore dirty clothes that ended up smelling disgusting.

I’m at my breaking point. I shouldn’t have to do everything around the house, when he’s at home all day. I like cleaning the house myself, because I am a bit OCD about cleaning, but we both live there, so I shouldn’t be doing 100% of the work. Any jobs around the house that have to do with maintenance (cleaning gutters, lawn mowing, etc), I do on the weekends. So, I work from 8am to 6pm every day, come home to clean the house and do the laundry, then spend the majority of my weekends on other tasks around the house. I have a husband that is at home for 2 weeks straight with nothing to do, so why is this all my responsibility?

The only time I’m happy any more is the two weeks when he’s away, or the rare 10 or 15 minutes when his game is down for maintenance and he actually pays attention to me. I’m not a needy person at all. I like my space and enjoy alone time, but he completely neglects me. If this was a hobby that he did during the day when I was at work, then spent time with me when I came home, even for an hour or two, I wouldn’t have an issue. However, he barely says hello to me when I walk in the door. If I say hello too loud or go to give him a kiss, he complains that he’s too busy. It may sound like he’s grown to hate me, but he’s convinced that our marriage is perfect and that we’re both happy. When he’s away and calls me, he’s my husband again, because he doesn’t have his game to play. However, within 2 minutes of arriving home, he’s back on his computer.

I’d only like serious answers from people who have been where I am, or who can offer real advice. I know some people think gaming addictions aren’t real, but they are. He’s as addicted to his game as alcoholics are to drinking. It’s not a hobby – it’s an addiction that is destroying our marriage.

Question by abbie f: Are there any low-cost drug treatment programs in Oregon?
My family is really low on cash at the moment, and I want to help my parents by finding a low-cost drug rehab center or drug treatment program for my younger brother who has gotten himself involved in drugs. Any suggestions?

Best answer:

Answer by beth e
I have included links below that you can check out. One has a list of centers affiliated with Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association. As far as I know, they can give grants to those who need it. You should call those centers and ask around. I hope you find a treatment center soon, and that your brother recovers form his addiction.

im doing LD debate, and was wondering what was the percent of people cured by drug rehab?
Please cite a reliable source.

Answer by …and the crowd goes wild!
I went to drug rehab and they always said 9/10 of you are gonna be right back here in under five years. Anyway, that’s what they told us, but the numbers can’t be that good. Especially when most everybody that goes is doing it for court, and isn’t actually planning on quitting. I don’t know what the actual stats are, do your own homework!

Question by robin *: i am going to a job interview for the position of an admissions counselor at a drug/alcohol treatment center..?
any pointers to nail this job?? and idea of what i will be doing?? also, any knowledge of the salary?? i get really anxious before interviews so i want to be prepared and really wow them!! anything will help, thanks so much!!

Answer by Canan
… make sure you have no smell of alcohol, shaky hands, dilated or constricted pupils ….(I’m kidding only half way, since these places like their paying “customers” but give very little shit about their actual or potential employees suffering from these conditions…).

(half) seriously now; don’t take the interview, the job, anything so seriously! Imagine if this doesn’t work, something else will, no big deal, this way, you’re relaxed and not tight or nervous (or appear like under the influence of something or too shy for the job).

I’m not sure what your personal or professional background and experience is, and the qualifications vary on the facility, but your job should be fun and definitely not tedious. Most of the ‘clients’ will be at the worst time of their life, anxious, physically – and often times mentally as well – sick or ill (no one goes to a drug/alcohol treatment center if they haven’t hit ‘rock bottom yet…). They may be hostile without any personal intentions to you and remember some are still under the influence… good luck!
