Question by Alejandro: can drug addiction affect a persons brain later in life?
Im talking about drugs like cocain etc heavy drugs…

my ex partner was addicted to drugs a few years ago and during our relationship of 1.5 years she did do and say some strange things and behaviour was irrational at times.

what effects can drugs like cocain have on a persons brain/personality later in life like say 6 years later even if they are totally clean now?

Answer by TinyEMT
Drugs can affect a person’s behavior long after they have stopped using drugs.it is believed that a person’s brain is programmed to stop developing when someone is using drugs so when they stop using, they tend to act the age that they were when they started.some of the chemicals in their brain may now be off balance and could be sending them messages to do things that make no sense at the time or seem inappropriate.Depending on the type of drugs used, how much was used, and for how long;the effects could be short lived or they can last forever, sometimes even getting worse. It all depends on the damage caused by the persons drug use.

Q&A: We are going to confront (kindly) our drug-addicted sister tonight. Do you know any right words?

Question by Red Ant: We are going to confront (kindly) our drug-addicted sister tonight. Do you know any right words?
The 51 year old “little” sister has been a drug addict since high school. Her husband of 27 years gave up and they are getting divorced (not that he was any angel). The little sister recently had back surgery (doc did a great job), and she is not doing exercises or anything to help herself. She has used the situation (although extreme) to get drugs first, attention second, and was hoping someone would take care of her afterward for the rest of her life. That is not happening.
She has sent us to the pharmacy to refill muscle relaxers, Hydrocodone, and God knows what else — only to be told it’s too soon for a refill. In other words, she’s as much a drug user now as ever before. She pulled attempted suicide a year and 1/2 ago. We weren’t amused, but we can’t live her life for her, be her mother, or whatever else it is she doesn’t want to do.
My other sane sister and I are going over to her apartment tonight to drop off Narcotics Anonymous material and tell her the same thing my brother and wife told her, “We love you, but you have to quit doing this. We can’t be your Saviour, you have to clean up and care about your life.”
Besides dropping off the NA material (which is wonderful), what can my sister and I say to her that could possibly get her out of her SELF, SELF, SELF, SELF, SELF, SELF ????
I’m just sick of this, but can’t quit if little sister is going to hang suicide over our heads again. Thank you for any replies.

Jesus can and Will take away her drug addiction. She has to believe in Him first…and trust in Him that He will. He did it for me. Maybe tell her this. Pray with her…Help her find a nice non denominational church she can worship in.

Question by thehabit237: Should I give this book to a recovering addict?
I just finished reading the book Tweak for the third time, the memoirs of Nic Sheff, who was a crystal meth addict. My cousin is a recovering addict and I was wondering if I should give this to her as inspiration or what, I’m not sure if I should. Why is Cindy McCain’s drug addiction discounted?

DRUG ADDICTION REHAB 9 Comments »

Question by : Why is Cindy McCain’s drug addiction discounted?
When living in S Carolina in 1999, I received a phone call from a polling organizaion asking me how I felt about Mrs McCain’s drug “addiction”. I later learned that this organization was working for Dr Karl Rove who was Gov Bush’s campaign manager in the Republican primaries.

I thought little of it until the issue came up again in the current campaign.

While I may have trivalized Mrs McCain’s drug dependency, Great Americans like Dr Rove and Gov Bush did not. They did not want the White House turned into a Betty Ford clinic.

To the best of my knowledge, neither Dr Rove nor President Bush have reputiated their claim that Cindy McCain was, in effect, a druggie and so inappropriate for First Lady.

Real Conservatives, like Dr Rove, “W” and Rush Limbaugh take a hard line on pill poppers and we should respect their sage wisdom.

If the claims of 1999 were true and, according to the “zero tolerance” set by heros like Rush, Mrs McCain must forfeit her title if Mr McCain wins.

Recovered addict seeking forgiveness from daughter………?

Question by LEESA: Recovered addict seeking forgiveness from daughter………?
Is it fair for a mother to ask her daughter for forgiveness after she just disappered out of her daughters life and spiraled down the life of an addict? Will the mother after 3 1/2 years of being clean ever get to see or even hear her daughters voice again. And If the mother does get the chance what can the mother say when sorry doesn’t seem good enough. I never stopped loving or caring or thinking about my daughter. Mostly I was ashamed of what I had become. I’ve tried contacting my daughter but she never responds. I hope someone out there has some anwers. I have really turned my life around and did it not only for me but so that my daughter would maybe be proud of me. I have a good job and a very good reputation within the community where I now reside. But it feels like no matter what I accomplish in the future or present it will never be enough to make up for my horrible past. All of my accomplishments mean nothing to me if I can’t have the forgiveness of my daughter

Q&A: Do I have to study specifically something to be an addiction worker?

Question by Somebody: Do I have to study specifically something to be an addiction worker?
I’m graduating soon and I really want to help people with drug addiction but I don’t know if I have to go to a college where they teach specifically those things. Does it really matter if I’ll go to a college and then I’ll be a nurse and so on…Can I still work as an addiction worker? I live in California and I don’t know about any specific colleges near me. I searched the internet too

Best answer:

Answer by lil bit
It can help just to read some books on alcoholism, eating disorders, drug addiction, excessive spending, smoking. They may have a course at the College – but I have never seen one seperate class for addictions. I think it is what one learns in college when taking classes for social work (Bachelors in Social Work; Masters in Social Work) – it is probably in the cirrculum.
