What is the difference between a physical drug addiction and a pschological drug addiction?DRUG ADDICTION REHAB Add comments5 Responses to “What is the difference between a physical drug addiction and a pschological drug addiction?” |
Physical- you have withdrawls because you have taken it so long.
psychological- you think your having withdrawls because you think your addicted to drugs.
Physical is the drug has an addicting substance in in it like nicotine that makes you addicted. Pschological drug addictions are in your head and you’re emotionally attached to the drug than physically. You can have an emotional addiction to pretty much anything; food, alcohol..anything really. That’s why so many people do pot, there’s no substance in it that makes you addicted, unless you have an emotional addiction to it, you’re fine.
Physical addiction is a byproduct of the body developing tolerance to a drug. Essentially, your body gets used to the drug and when it is stopped abruptly, it develops a response thats usually the opposite of the symptoms you get when you are intoxicated. Most withdrawals are uncomfortable but not deadly with the exception of alcohol, benzodiazepines (valium, xanax, etc) and bariturates. Stopping any of these abruptly after taking significant doses over a period of time can result in serious problems including seizures and death.
Psychological addiction is related to the person’s belief that they need the agent to function properly or at all. A humorous version would be like Linus and his blanket…he just can’t manage without it. People can have similar problems with certain medications, particularly sleep medications not all of which are addictive physiologically. If a person gets convinced that they cannot sleep without the help of drug x then they will be psychologically dependent on that agent.
Psychological and physiological dependency frequently go together. Generally speaking, if you say someone is “addicted” they have at least psychological dependency. If they had physical tolerance but not psychological dependency, you would just say that they had physical tolerance, usually not dependency….and there are some people like that-people that take high dose opiates for severe cancer pain. Their bodies are tolerant to the medications but they are not necessarily psychologically addicted.
In a physical drug addiction your body not only goes through withdraws without the substance, but releases hormones as an implication of the physical “need” for the drug. Your body is dependent on the substance. In a physical addiction you also grow a tolerance, where more and more is needed to have the same effect.
In a pschological addiction the person feels overcome by the desire for the substance and can only think of their desire. Does not face physical withdraws though.
Physical: is when you are physically sick when you stop taking drugs
pschological: is when you get cravings for the drugs
most drug addicts go through both of these, that’s why its so hard for them to quit.
this also applies to cigerette(sp) smokers
