Is what I am doing a good method to stop my addiction?

Uncategorized Add comments

I quit all thoughts of my addiction. Now whenever I notice or think of anything that reminds me of this addiction, I return my thoughts into my body and into my breath. Just like in meditation, I focus on something single to not let my instincts get the better of me. It works for others things such as my food and candy cravings too. It worked so far but its been only a few days so I don’t know.

So I am asking; What is this called that I am doing? Does it work? Will I succeed in ending my addiction.

It is mind control and you have found a wonderful skill to help you with your addictions. Many people spend years in therapy working on finding solutions and skills to help them with their addictions and you have done if by yourself and should be very proud of yourself. If this skill is helping prevent you from your addictions it’s working! This skill is also call “diversion” that is the ability to divert your mind just the way that you are doing. It is also called “impulse control.” Good Work!!

You don’t say what your addiction is. I was addicted to cgarettes and stopped cold turkey with no help afte 18 years of heavy smoking. If it is alcohol or drugs, you probably would be smart to go to AA or NA for some real understanding and to be around winners who made it.

You need to choose. What is more important, doing it yourself or getting well? When you left out your substance of choice, I felt less able to answer your question because the answer differs with the substnce, the harm it did to you and the amount of time you have been addicted.

Best of luck to you no matter what you choose.
