Well, Psychologists (unless they are social Psychologists) tend to emphasize in the individual causes of problems such as alcoholism. For instance, what kind of behaviors, values, situations and socialization an individual had that led him/her to adopt that addictive pattern. That approach will be influenced and framed by the particular theoretical, conceptual and methodological frameworks that an specific Psychologist may held.

In the case of a Sociologist, the study of alcoholism will focus on COLLECTIVE (social, communities) traditions, behaviors and values hand how this may affect social life. Sociologist will also study the institutions and strategies created in a society to deal with certain conflicts or problems. Like with the Psychological approach, the Sociologist particular ways to study and analyze an specific conflict or problem will be also influenced and framed by the particular set theoretical, conceptual and methodological frameworks that the specialist held.

Therefore, besides the fundamental difference between the Sociological and Psychological approach, there are also theoretical, conceptual and methodological differences among Sociologists when they study a particular “problem”. You can look under: applied sociology, comparative sociology, cultural sociology and demography (among other branches within Sociology) to check their particular approach to the study of alcoholism.

    Hope this helps you!

physiologist would focus on just the individual whereas a sociologist would focus not just on the individual but they would also focus on why alcoholism has occur looking at the life of the alcoholic and seeing how the society may have affected the alcoholic and the impact that alcoholism may have on the society.
