Because alcohol is a toxin, and if the liver’s function is compromised by a disease, then it cannot remove the toxin from the body and you could die.

  2. Krissi Says:

Because the alcohol is what cased the liver problems. Drinking more will only worsen it. That’s like asking why if you started a fire with gasoline, you shouldn’t just pour the whole can on once it’s going. Your liver will shut down, and that is one organ you can’t live without. Also, you are less likely to get a liver transplant if you did the damage to yourself.

Cirrhosis is when scar tissue replaces healthy tissue in the liver preventing it from functioning well. The more scar tissue, the less it functions. Alcohol is poison to the liver and actually can cause cirrhosis if used long term such as in alcoholism, so drinking more alcohol will only damage the liver more until it reaches total failure which is fatal. Hepatitis simply means “inflammation of the liver.” Since it’s not good to make the liver inflammed, that is why you shouldn’t drink alcohol if you have hepatitis. It will just continue to cause more inflammation which can lead to permanent damage like cirrhosis.
