The Go Green Home is a living laboratory of green design, materials and innovation. We’ve deconstructed an existing single-family home — taking it apart board by board, nail by nail–and donated and recycled 95% of it! We’ve studied the sun, the winds and the neighborhood, and incorporated everything into the design and build of our new home. Plus we’re greening it all — from solar roof panels to recycled content countertops in the cutting edge cook’s kitchen. We’ll take you with us, step by step, updating frequently with journal entries and photos of our progress. Visit www.TheGoGreenHome.com for more information! Lymphoma patients see significant gains in health from aerobic exercise regimen: study

ADDICTION NEWS Comments Off

A healthy dose of exercise is good medicine, even for lymphoma patients receiving chemotherapy, says Kerry Courneya, Canada Research Chair in Physical Activity and Cancer in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta. The Healthy Exercise for Lymphoma Patients trial, a three-year study led by Courneya, published last month in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, found that a regimen of aerobic exercise training produced significant improvements in physical functioning and overall quality of life benefits in patients with lymphoma. Researchers recruited 122 patients with Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, then classified participants by disease type and treatment status, whether they were undergoing chemotherapy at the time or receiving no treatments. Participants were randomly assigned to an exercise program designed to maximize cardiovascular fitness or to usual care, which did not include an exercise component. “The exercise program consisted of interval training,” said Courneya. “We had patients ride the bike at a modest intensity, interspersed with high-intensity bouts of exercise, where they would go full out, exerting maximum effort for a minute or two at a time, then rest for a few minutes before doing it again. That type of interval training has really been shown to maximize improvements in fitness.” Exercisers trained three times a week for 12 weeks and were encouraged to stay the course with behavioural support techniques that

Teen speaks about the dangers of drug addiction, how she became involved in consuming and selling drugs, and her path to recovery. Did you know that most teens don’t use drugs? In fact, NIDAs latest survey that measures drug use and attitudes about drug use among high school teens shows a long-term decline in cigarette smoking, alcohol, marijuana and some other drugs. However, we are seeing a high rate of prescription drug abuse among teens. Last year, nearly one in ten high school seniors reported nonmedical use of Vicodin and one in twenty reported abusing Oxycontin, both potentially addictive opioid painkillers. Just because its prescribed by a doctor doesnt mean its not dangerous, and people should only use these drugs the way the doctor recommends. The biggest problem of drug use with teens is that there is no way to know who will become addicted. If you take the risk and try drugs, your life could become very complicated. Sleater-Kinney’s Last Show: 04. Jumpers

ADDICTION NEWS Comments Off

Sleater-Kinney’s last performance, on August 12th, 2006, at the Crystal Ballroom in their hometown of Portland, Oregon. A kickass, punky indie rock band, the best to come out of the Portland music scene, and what I believe is the best band associated with riot grrrl, no contest. Catchy as hell to boot, and responsible for the best album of 2005, The Woods, which kicks the shit out of anything else that came out that year in terms of sheer rockoutness. This is one of their best gigs. You can tell they really wanted to go out with a bang. Highlights include an incendiary performance of End of You, probably the definitive version, and Entertain, the best punk song written since Lord knows when. Setlist: 01. The Fox 02. Surf, Skate & Plate Raw Footage: Mike Pugh on Jimmy & Lucas Getting Busted

Uncategorized Comments Off

A reality show series based on a weirdly unique family living in Santa Barbara, CA and their chaotic life filled with surfers, skaters and healthy gourmet cooking. Follow the lives of Stacy (an active 400+ lb. mom who is in desperate need of bariatric surgery), Scott (a computer guru who drives a pink car, runs his own business and struggles to carve out a living in one of the world’s richest cities), Cousteau (their 9-year-old son who has surfed and skated since he was four-years-old, yet through his many years of competition has yet to bring home a first place trophy) and their perky Boston Terriers, Happy and Petal. You’ll also meet an eccentric cast of the 20 or so characters who fill their daily life. From the multitude of groms that are always around, to “Layback” Mike Pugh, an ex-pro skater and snowboarder, who struggles to stay clean and sober after losing his best friend to drug addiction, to “Uncle” Chris Keet who despite a good case of adult ADD, runs Santa Barbara’s premier surf school, Surf Happens, and is trying to coach Cousteau to the winner’s circle. We are currently in the development phase and working on our pilot. This is footage of Mike Pugh describing Jimmy and Lucas’s plan to camp out at the skate park to celebrate Lucas’s 8th birthday.
