What is the true definition of alcoholism?

ALCOHOLISM ADDICTION Add comments

Would you call someone that drinks 3-6 (sometimes more) beers every evening an alcoholic? I think so. Tell me if I’m wrong. I’m sick of trying to justify this. I need some external input. Thanks!

  1. White Raven Says:

The technical definition changes with each DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual), and therapists often each use their own, as does AA. The most useful definition I’ve ever found was from the last DSM that I used before switching out of the field. Basically, if drinking, no matter what the frequency or number of drinks, negatively affects your life, you’re an alcoholic. If it doesn’t, it’s not really a problem, other than other people thinking it might be, but that’s more of a relationship problem and not a drinking problem.

If there are any negative impacts and the person’s life is unmanageable.
