There are rumors about our most famous musical composers and drug use. Check out how Handel wrote the Messiah! Check out Tesla! I know there are many people who used chemicals to have recreational highs. I am not sure of the relationship though. Two very intelligent people in my life were pretty hard drug abusers, but both have cleaned their act up and now are quite successful.

An intelligent mind will often prove to be restless, it is forever whirring with hundreds of different thoughts and ideas, sometimes it becomes too much to bare. Like a computer overloading. People start thinking too much and too deeply and simply can’t shut out the thoughts when they wish to.
This is often a cause for insomnia for example, the mind is active yet the body is physically exhausted, it’s very difficult to deal with.

Narcotics which include alcohol, numb the senses and slow the brain. It allows half thoughts to form and a kind of blanketed haze to settle over the mind, quietening these thoughts.
It’s understandable why people who were especially creative or intelligent would rely on these drugs as a kind of security blanket.
Whether it be through ignorance or desperation, people have always and probably will always turn to drugs for a last desperate attempt at relief.
