Yes, but there are a lot of other factors, also.

This is a really good article.

“Alcoholism” isn’t genetic per say, but addiction is. But just because you have the gene doesn’t mean you will be an addict. It comes down to personnel choice. My uncle is a raging alcoholic, and my dad doesn’t drink at all. My sister is a pill addict, and I won’t take a pain pill even if I’ve had surgery. My family is full of addiction, so I stay away from those things. You can decide for yourself.

no it is just that that was how a person was raised

There is now a lot of evidence that suggests that it is. But even better is that we know that addictive personalities are genetic. But these behaviors can be learned also.

I think it has a tad to do with genetics, however I think it’s more of a learned behavior than anything else. People that grow up with addiction in their lives generally will express the same behaviors and have the same struggles that they’ve learned, that’s why they call addiction a vicious cycle. Both of my parents were addicts at one point or another, my Mom was an alcoholic and my dad was addicted to meth for years. It was a major struggle through childhood, both of them are clean and sober today because of AA, and NA. Both of which are great programs, also if you are dealing with an alcoholic I suggest you get yourself to an Alanon meeting quickly! It’s a great support group to teach you how to deal with the alcoholic behavior, whether u choose to stay in the relationship or leave it… it will give you the tools to do one or the other. Because what you are going through is usually very painful. Alcoholism is a destructive, scary disease that changes lives… including those around the alcoholic. Alanon was the only thing that kept me sane while my parents were using, its by the grace of God that they are sober today and that our family is in tact still because of it. And it really taught me some great coping skills so that I didn’t repeat their behavior. http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/
