Yep. I’m no expert, but I got an open container violation when I was around 17 and had to attend alcohol therapy sessions for 2 weeks as punishment. According to what I learned (this was 6 years ago mind you), moderate alcoholism was 2 drinks a day for an adult male. That’s 2 12-oz beers, or 2 4-5 oz glasses of wine, or 2 shots. Any more than that is considered heavy drinking.

Most people would define that as alcoholism, yes. But if you can go a week without drinking no problem, and if it doesn’t interfere with your responsibilities, I wouldn’t consider it that big a problem. But then, I’m also somewhat of an alcoholic, so perhaps I’m not the best judge.

If the drinking is compulsive…which at that point, almost definitely is…then yes, it is alcoholism.

    pretty much

Yes. No one needs to drink alcohol at all.

4-7 beers in an hour or two would make someone who has never had a beer or alcohol staggering drunk!

Having drunk this much over time, this amount won’t make a regular drinker drunk, just a regular drinker of alcohol.

The problem isn’t that the person is getting drunk every day, it is that they appear to NEED to drink every day.

Drinking every day – at a rate of more than one or two drinks a day – would be considered a habit or addiction of sorts.

Some people don’t drink during the week, but may drink 20 beers on a Friday night – or all day Saturday. This is a binge drinker – I was a binge drinker – but quit drinking 12 years ago.

No alcoholism is when your drink dependent. Which people get completely wrong. If they ‘need’ to drink then yes. But just because you wanna come home and have a couple of beers every night or what ever, doesn’t make you an alki. People drink wine, but are they classed as alki’s?

There is no set number of drinks that define alcoholism. One of the most common ways of determining substance abuse or dependence is whether there are negative consequences. Is the drinking causing someone to miss work or under perform? Is it damaging relationships with friends and family? If the answer is yes, then alcoholism might be the culprit. Some people are genetically pre-disposed to alcohol dependency– if there is a family history of drug and alcohol abuse, that greatly increases the odds of developing a drinking problem.

But unless drinking is impacting other areas of this person’s life or their health, I’d be inclined to say that simply having like, 4-7 beers day, is not conclusive.

Yes, because it’s pointless. If you’re used to drinking that much, then it’s not going to do anything to you. You’re drinking it because you are addicted

  13. Angela Says:

    Absolutely.

  14. Jason Says:

It just depends, if you stop drinking for 2-3 days with no symptoms of withdrawal (even minor ones) your not a alcoholic…

a alcoholic is someone who is PHYSICALLY addicted to alcohol.

  15. Colanth Says:

It depends. Back when I was brewing, I usually had about 3 pints a night. Every night. (I loved my house brew.) Then I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Now I drink 3 pints/year (there’s a reason). The last of the nightly beers I had was the night before I was diagnosed. I just didn’t drink any more. (Still have about 4 gallons in a keg – it’s got to be REALLY mellow by now.) No fuss, no regrets (about the beer, I regret being diabetic.) I sit here thinking about it and don’t miss it at all. No desire. So – was I an alcoholic? No.

Could someone who drinks even 1 beer a day be alcoholic? Yes.
