If I start drinking and have a family history of Alcoholism, what are my chances of becoming an Alcoholic?

ALCOHOLISM ADDICTION Add comments

Both of my parents were Alcoholics near the time they made me, though my mom quit drinking for the nine months she was carrying me, and my grandparents on both sides where Alcoholics as well. So I’m curious if I started drinking are my chances fairly high that I could begin to lose control over it and become an Alcoholic?

Thanks.

i am the same as you, my parents and grandparents are alcoholics, but i drink regularly and im not addicted, so it must be just how lucky you are with your DNA and chromasones

There is always a chance of you becoming addicted no matter what your family history is. The choice is yours as to how much you drink and why you drink. If you are drinking to cope with daily life then yes you have a greater chance of becoming an alcoholic. If you drink occasionally and can control if your chances are much lower. Good Luck

no, alcoholism is not a gene carrying trait. alcoholism is a disease/addiction and its all mental thinking that makes people want to drink. my mother is an alcoholic, and i sometimes drink. i don’t even like drinking all that much, but yet, i’m not an alcoholic. to put it simply, you can’t end up like your family. it all depends on how YOU drink and how often you want to drink.

    good luck.

Well, this is such a delicate subject, and I will try to explain things from my personal experience, up to now! First of all, you must be of age to drink, legally. Ask yourself, why do want to drink? I used to drink nothing but beer, but then I met my now husband, and he and I drank all the time! (Liqueur & Whiskey) This was fun to me, because I was getting over a divorce after being married for roughly 20 years! I became depressed because my heart was hurting! I gave this man my entire heart, and eventually my heart started healing! So, anyway, I couldn’t wait to have a drink, because my now husband and I had so much fun, and the sex was good, to me, and honestly, I miss drinking now, because our marriage is so serious, and I feel so old! I can’t be myself because I am not that same person! Yes, alcohol will change you, if you let it! I could go on and on about drinking alcohol, and to tell you the ups and downs of it! You can refer to “alcohol” on the web, and get information there, but I truly want to tell you that, I haven’t had a drink in about three weeks! Good for me, (right?) but my husband threatened me to go to counseling if I take another drink, and he will also pay me money to stop for six weeks! (Yes, I could use the money, but don’t threaten me!) I am basically doing this for me! I have called the police twice, because of my drinking and my husband is so controlling and I have other issues at home! I can’t get him to listen to me! I am always the guilty one! (He is an ex-cop) I love him, but there are times I just want to be left alone, and not be controlled by anyone! Since I have stopped drinking, I have been on the computer responding to questions such as these! I enjoy writing down how I feel! I also want to be as honest as I can! I can be a fun person to live with, and I have made so many mistakes! My step daughter, her son, my husband and I live together in “his house” and that decision was brought early on in the marriage by my husband! It’s been six and one-half years! She is 29 years of age! I am a very sexual person, and I can’t do what I want to do, since “we all have keys to “his house!” Drink, but drink responsibly! Stay out of trouble and have fun! Don’t forget to check out the website! Thanks for listening!

According to the book Under the Influence: A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism Written By James Robert Milam, and Katherine Ketcham you have a fifty percent chance of becoming an Alcoholic. If you take a drink and can’t control the amount you take after that first drink there is a good chance you are alcoholic, or if you want to stop drinking and are unable to do so no matter how strong the wish or desire there is a good chance you are an alcoholic
