Alcoholism is hard to figure out. Some people drink but aren’t alcoholics and some drink and are. I think the main thing that makes you an alcoholic is the inability to cut yourself off. If you start drinking and never stop (to the point that you are getting ridiculously drunk all the time) then that is bad. If you are only having one drink with dinner, it’s harmless.

alcholism gene? is there such a thing to an addiction for chocolate?

    Not initially.
If one or both of your parents is alcoholic, you would be well advised never to take a drop of “the creature”.
I had to learn the hard way, of course!

If you ever had a blackout, (temporary amnesia while drinking) you are alcoholic and no two ways about it.

that depends…can you stop after a few drinks? do you feel like you need a drink to cope with the day? occational drinking doesn’t mean you’re an alcoholic.

Alcoholism runs in our family, both sides, yikes. I just told my kids to be aware and take it easy when it comes to drinking. You have the information you need to guide you. Make good choices for yourself and you won’t have a problem. Just have a couple of drinks and cut yourself off after that. Drinking too much just makes you feel crummy the next day anyway.

If someone in your family (especially parents or grandparents) is or was an alcoholic, then you are more likely to have a tendency towards addiction. The addiction might not be triggered by just an occasional drink, but you have to be very careful, and be much more aware of how much you are drinking, and how often. Often a situation of a lot of stress will trigger the addiction, so if you do drink, be especially careful to never drink when you are sad or angry – this will help keep you from falling into the trap.

Since you know that you are genetically disposed to addiction, learn the signs. Talk to someone who is close to you, and make sure they know the signs. Just because you have a genetic disposition does not mean you will definitely become an alcoholic, but keep your eyes open so that you can seek help at the very first signs of “problem drinking”.
