Psychologically speaking, is alcoholism considered a diseases or a result of a voluntary action?

ALCOHOLISM ADDICTION Add comments

The way I see it, drinking alcohol is a choice because you are voluntarily putting it into your body and you have the choice NOT to do it. Being predisposed to it does not make it an involuntary act. I am predisposed to gaining weight and eating, I do what I can to eat right.

It really depends on the person and their sense of stability.

In most cases it is considered a disease because its out of control.

Voluntary action is a part of it. But like I said, it depends on the person.

There are differing views Some see it as a disease, others as a mental weakness. Personally, I think there is a definite predisposition toward developing alcoholism. Like diabetes, and many other metabolic problems run in families. Some will develop it, and others not.

Alcoholism is never cured, like diabetes, only can be ‘arrested’ so to speak, by not drinking. Hard for most to do, but not beyond hope. It creates a lot of Psych problems for the person, and for the family and friends.
