yeah – he doesnt believe in AA and so hes full of shit

  2. scribbins Says:

Also, to say – that rehabs only treat someone once they have stopped drinking – is paradoxical, proves ignorance. U can only start treating someone for alcoholism once they have had a detox, because alcohol is physically addictive and the alcoholic would need to be prescribed a benzo of sorts to help them through their withdrawals, not a great time to be implementing intensive therapy desinged to aid the alcohlic address emotional issues related to addiction. Surly a Dr should f**king know this.

  3. scribbins Says:

This Dr couldnt have followed an addict from detox stage through to rehabilitation and clearly has no clue what he is talking about. Face to face it would take me approximately 2 min to dismantle his argument, not because I get any particular pleasure out of debating, but because I would base my argument on obsevation and experience due to working as an Addictions Counsellor in a rehab. I am not in recovery, but felt I needed to comment because its his kind of theorising that stifles treatment.

  4. badtown88 Says:

He makes an excellent point about treatment. It makes zero sense to start treatment after one quits drinking. I’ve never understood that method and I’m pleased to find out I’m not alone. Common sense would tell you that you have to conquer your problem before you conquer drinking. This country is fucked up on so many levels it disturbs me.

Shit, now I feel like a drink haha

  5. Hammersley1967 Says:

Evey, stop pretending that you understand what the adults are saying…

Your comment makes no sense and shows in no uncertain terms that you did not understand my comment at all…

SSSHHHH!!! The grown ups are talking!

Go out the back and play with the dog…

    There’s a good girl…

  6. evet45 Says:

Detox takes about 3-5 days and it It used to be 90 days of rehab treatnment but insurance does not cover that anymore.
Treatment begins inpatient the day the person arrives. the mind gets clearer with time. Actually it takes 1-3 years before the mind truly clears. so you don’t know WTH UR talking about!

  7. tidalriddle Says:

Even if this is, on some “level” inaccurate or wrong, it is brilliant just as food for thought. And if it’s right on, we should be all the more impressed.

  8. Hammersley1967 Says:

    And your mummy…

  9. Hammersley1967 Says:

“peele’s contention of abstinence first then treatment is a canard. all hospitals & most rehabs have detoxification units. most in-patient/out-patient therapies require 28 day abstinence periods but that hardly seems unreasonable.”

Yep, and the vast majority of psychotherapists also insist on abstinence before providing treatment. So do non-12 step rehabs. So, singling out AA is somewhat of a ruse…

  10. tinagannes Says:

Thanks for smart individuals still out there. It’s scary how AA have penetrated the society. I pretty soon understood that something was wrong when I started attending the meetings. Surrender your self, right?

even peele’s reviled AA doesn’t specifically require abstinence:’the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking’.

abstinence works for me; moderation may work for others. saying treatment is withheld prior to abstaining is just a bald-faced lie.

  12. S0RDIDTRUTH Says:

    Quack, quack!

  13. goatman257 Says:

    This guy talks complete sense.

I’ve lived with an alcoholic for 20 years, Stanton is not belittling the problems of alcoholics, he is proposing a different approach to the problem and I completely agree with him.

  14. raytownloc Says:

Stanton Peele is a psychologist, not a scientist and not an alcoholic and frankly doesn’t know anything about addiction. Just because he has Dr. in front of his name doesn’t make him an expert. He has no medical background and no scientific background, and no experience with alcoholism personally, why is anyone even listening to him?

  15. raytownloc Says:

People listen to him because he says what the want to hear. None of it is true. Addicts and alcoholics do not abuse because they enjoy it, they do not abuse because they want to, they do not abuse because they are weaker than those who do not. He has no proof or research to back up any of his claims he just writes what people have secretly believed all along because they are not addicts and believe themselves superior too those who are.

  16. BSintolerant Says:

heheh…It’s true! People always want what they can’t have.

  17. quickcap Says:

    I love you too
